What Are Fixed Appliances?

Fixed appliances are orthodontic devices that are bonded or cemented in place and cannot be removed by the patient. Unlike removable retainers or aligners, these appliances work continuously to guide jaw growth, break harmful oral habits, or create the space needed for healthy tooth development.

Common Types of Fixed Appliances

Palatal Expanders
A palatal expander gently widens the upper jaw to correct crossbites, create room for crowded teeth, and improve breathing and facial symmetry. The appliance is adjusted gradually at home using a small key, and most children adapt quickly.

Habit-Breaking Appliances
Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and prolonged pacifier use can affect tooth alignment and jaw development. We offer discreet fixed appliances—such as tongue cribs or habit guards—that gently remind children to stop these behaviors, allowing normal growth to resume.

Space Maintainers
