Pulpotomy

A pulpotomy is a common dental procedure that helps save a baby tooth when decay or injury has reached the nerve inside. Think of it as a "baby root canal" — but simpler and gentler.

When a cavity goes deep or a tooth gets bumped hard, the soft tissue inside (the pulp) can become inflamed or infected. Instead of removing the entire tooth, we remove only the damaged portion of the pulp in the crown, leaving the healthy roots intact. We then seal the tooth with a medicated filling and often place a crown to protect it.

Why Save a Baby Tooth?

Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they play important roles: they help your child chew properly, speak clearly, and hold space for permanent teeth. Losing a baby tooth too early can lead to crowding and alignment problems down the road.

What to Expect

The procedure is straightforward and typically completed in one visit:

1. We numb the area so your child feels comfortable
2. We gently remove the infected pulp from the top portion of the tooth
3. We place a medicated material to soothe and protect the remaining healthy pulp
4. We seal the tooth and often place a stainless steel crown for strength

Most children do very well during and after the procedure. We take every step to keep your child calm and comfortable, explaining things in kid-friendly terms.

Aftercare

Your child may feel some tenderness for a day or two, which usually responds well to over-the-counter pain relief. We'll give you specific instructions, but normal activities and eating can typically resume the same day.
