What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a treatment that saves a tooth when the soft tissue inside—called the pulp—becomes infected or inflamed. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels, and when it's damaged by deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscesses if left untreated.

During root canal therapy, we gently remove the infected pulp, clean and disinfect the inner chambers of the tooth, then seal it to prevent future infection. Most patients are surprised to learn that the procedure itself is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.
